Brixton in holding a Handmade Christmas market with some local flavour. There are many markets at the moment , many many people trying the same thing, but the Brixton one will have a slightly different feel and set of products.
For a start no other maket sells Jospehina's gorgeous patchwork shwe shwe bags and ours will. There will also be some really unique things like a toy workshop where parents will be taught to make toys for their kids with objects in their houses - like the best play dough, bubble mixtures, puppets and more.
In the run up to this market I gave Jospehina a pattern for sewn Christmas decorations to see if she could do anything with the little bits of shwe shwe she had left from the bags and she has made the loveliest decorations. My favourite is the one that looks a bit like an apple. They are too lovely for words and already Jospehina came to me to say she has a problem. People - mostly our family - who have seen the apples have placed orders for them and she doesn't know how she will fill those orders and make enough for the market. So I am holding back on my orders and if there are any left after the market I will buy them from her. My sister is making some gorgeous books, and aprons. My neighbour Lebsie, who is 9 has been making bird feeders as a Christmas treat for birds and I know I will buy some of these too.
If you are in Jozi and want to pop in and see some of the truly unique products then please join us on the 11th December at the Brixton Recreation Centre. 10 am - 4pm. Lovely lunches, tea and cakes will be served too.
