Last week I joined a walk presented by the Parktown Westcliff Heritage Trust in the old shopping district in Johannesburg.
Much has changed since this was once the hub of all the great shopping houses in Johannesburg but it still has a very vibrant personality, with many different people from all different places living and shopping. Most of the pavements were filled with colourful hawkers, some of them selling different shwe shwe products.
The shwe shwe shoes were being sold alongside animal pelt shoes, apparently made by the brother of the store owner.
The Shwe shwe hats where quite lovely and I considered buying one, but with each person that stopped to look the seller raised her price, so I opted for a photo instead.
While most of the other people taking photographs on the walk were photgraphing the buildings, my super friend Marlise was helping me spot the shwe shwe wearing ladies.
