Just a quick note, and a picture to tell you some heart happy news - that the Brixton Birthday Cake Club gave out its first cake today.
I have had so many of the lovely kids in this neighbourhood come to me after work to tell me it was their birthday and that they got nothing, and asking if I had anything to give them. Some have come to ask if I have something they can take to school as other kids bring cake and they have nothing to take.
My Husband - Marvelous Matthew and I have had to do some creative thinking and several kids have gone to school with half a packet of Marie Biscuits, some who have ovens at home have gone home with muffin mix packets, some with icing sugar and biscuits, or whatever we could 'magic' out of our food cupboard at seven o clock at night.
A few weeks ago one of my favourite kids, who often comes and hangs out with me and has me in stitches with her various acts and humour (watch out for her on Isidingo in a few years) had a birthday. When I got home her mom was at my gate and wanted to speak inside with me. Remo was at home crying because it was her birthday and did not understand that her parents were only getting a bit of money the following week and had none for birthday cake, and could I lend them R20. The thought of sweet Remo in tears got me fired up to do something I have wanted to do for a long time.
I have worked out a deal with the local Pick N Pay that they will pay half and I will fund raise half so that every child in Brixton that wants one can get a FREE cake on their Birthday and set out a system to claim their cakes that does not involve our doorbell ringing at seven pm each night ( and also make sure the system is not abused)
Palesa turned 9 today and so we went to get her cake, she was the first recipient of a Brixton Birthday Cake. Some of the Bakery staff sang to her and the manager came to wish her in person.
Remo is in the pink shwe shwe dress. Palesa's very caring older brother Katlego came with her to fetch her cake and decided that he needed to borrow a wig from the box of festival gear in my garage as it was such an exciting day. He and Palesa are standing with Disney(sic) the baker of special cakes at the Pick N Pay

This is a beautiful idea, you are amazing.
