These grannies ( gogos) are just great and the Gogos for Mandela project well worth supporting.
The whole issue of grannies playing soccer is such a lovely local topic. I remember helping with a safety program in Soweto - about safety and sport where local school teams where supposed to play soccer with each other and then with a team from the local police. Only one school has turned up at the community hall fields by the time we were to start, but a local team of grannies and grandpa's that do pensioner excercise in the hall every day came out to play the girl's team so we could get started. They were a real delight, with those not on the field dancing at the side and singing support for the gogos.
In South Africa so much of our social fabric is held together by grannies, who look after their grandchildren all the time while their own chidlren work, often far away. It's gogo's who are running feeding schemes, opening homes for orphans, being the social conscience in communities and keeping the place together in general.A few weeks ago I heard Lloyd speak about an upcoming project he was working on where grannies - gogos would be re-enacting the big plays of the World Cup . It sounded like great fun and here is the first one.
The coolest part of these gogos is their shwe shwe logo with a lady with a baby on her back wrapped up in shwe shwe cloth while playing soccer
